The Best Clean/Vegan Lip Color
I don’t know about you, but I am always on the hunt for a new lip color that will nourish my lips and is long lasting. It was not easy finding a clean lip product that was also vegan. Most lip products have petroleum or beeswax in them.
Making the switch to cleaner lip products is so important. The average woman reapplies her lip makeup several times throughout the day; that is a lot of toxic ingredients to be adding to your lips. A lot of us also tend to bite/chew on our lips, which means that you are ingesting all those toxins. The mainstream brands tell you that you are getting instant hydration and that their products contain all these “natural” ingredients. That lip product from one of the popular brands can contain: canola oil, which is an oil that causes inflammation, titanium dioxide which can be cancer causing. That is just a few of the toxic ingredients in the mainstream brands.
The best part of switching to clean beauty is you don’t have to sacrifice the quality of the products or the performance.
IN THIS POST:
· The ingredients you don’t want in your lip products
· What ingredients that you do want in your lip products
· My current favorites for lip color products in various formulas at various price points
Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Lip Products:
Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is a common ingredient in many lip products, particularly lip balms. Petroleum is a byproduct of oil, so you don’t want that on your lips/skin. The products with this might feel moisturizing at first, but it can sometimes make your lips more dehydrated. Petroleum can also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane which has been linked to cancer and skin irritation.
Parabens – Methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethyl paraben are just some of the names. It is mainly used as a preservative in cosmetics. Parabens can cause endocrine disruption, which leads to all kinds of hormone issues, including infertility. They have also been linked to cancer.
Fragrance – your product might smell great, but fragrance can be filled with a multitude of harmful chemical such as phthalates, which are a known hormone disruptor. Synthetic chemicals can also trigger allergies and asthma.
Artificial dyes/color- Many times the color can come from heavy metals.
What Ingredients you do want in your lip products:
· Shea and Cocoa butter are both natural types of fats that come from the shea tree and cocoa bean. Butters, like shea and cocoa, help your lips hold on to moisture and help heal dry/chapped lips.
· Hyaluronic Acid helps retain moisture and keep your lips plump and soft.
Coconut oil is a great moisturizer and has healing properties, which make it good for chapped lips.
These balms are not only bee free, but soy and palm free as well. They are formulated with meadowfoam seed oil, which is highly emollient as well as coconut oil that aids in healing irritated, chafed skin. They also contain castor oil, cocao butter and jojoba oil. I love that these balms are ecocert cosmos certified as well as certified organic. I always have at least one of the hurraw lip balms with me at all times..My favorite colors are the cherry, which is a sheer red, the raspberry which is a sheer berry tint and the hazelnut which is a beautiful sheer mocha color.
Tower 28 – Shine On Lip Jelly $16
This formula is a gloss that adds a sheer layer of color. I was hesitant at first to try this formula because I thought it would be “sticky” like other glosses, but it feels like a balm once applied. The moisture from the apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, rose seed oil, and raspberry seed oil lasts for several hours. There are two formulas to choose from the glossy and the milky. The glossy has seven colors and the milky has six.
This lip oil has hyaluronic acid to lock in hydration, evening primrose oil that helps improve elasticity, avocado oil that is loaded with vitamins and has healing and soothing properties. It also has konjac root that has been known to protect against ultraviolet damage, shea butter to help heal dry cracked lips, and peptides to reduce the appearance of fine lines. It has a great applicator that is contoured for easy application. It looks and feels more like a balm. It comes in eleven different colors.
This is a balm formula with squalene and ceramides to add tons of moisture as well as hyaluronic acid to lock in all that moisture. It also has peptides to help plump up the fine lines and mango butter to leave your lips feeling ultra soft. I would not call this formula high shine it goes on like a balm and looks like a lip balm on. This color stayed on all morning for me. It comes in twelve colors.
Ilia Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil $26
This formula goes on like a gloss but dries like a balm. It is not overly glossy it gives you just the right amount of sheen to your lips. It is formulated with meadowfoam seed oil to add to moisture, vitamin E to soothe and heal as well as shea butter to help your lips hold onto moisture. It has a contoured applicator for easy application. It comes in six colors.
And as always, all products listed are vegan and cruelty free!
Happy shopping!
With Love,
Tracey
